CD Projekt Red Spent Over $80 Million On A Single Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion

Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Phantom Liberty can be considered like a soft relaunch for the game and it looks like the process to do so wasn’t cheap when your game has been out for so long. Post its launch the feedback has been positive and the money spent does help out in some positive way.

Cyberpunk 2077 DLC

After its launch in an terrible state in 2020, the massive, open world RPG from CDProjeckt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has been updated with numerous improvements as well as bug fixes and even a well-loved Netflix anime. This has all made the futuristic RPG to become more famous than ever. While some claim that the game’s fundamental issues can’t be resolved, CDPR hasn’t given up on Cyberpunk 2077.

The only DLC planned for the RPG, Phantom Liberty (and the free 2.0 update) was released on the 26th of September to praise from the public, with players declaring that the game was “saved.” But building something similar to Phantom Liberty isn’t cheap.

Cyberpunk 2077 DLC and 2.0 Update total cost

On the 5th of October, during an investor’s meeting, CDPR revealed the total budget for Phantom Liberty. The cost was split between 275 million for “direct production expenditures” and another 95 million for “marketing campaign costs.”

If we convert this amounts to approximately $21 million and $63 million USD, respectively, which is approximately $84 million in total.  Was this expenditure result of the recent layoffs at CDPR ?

Conclusion

It kind of makes sense for CDPR to push back hard with the DLC given I think there are rumors floating around regarding the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 being worked on. Hopefully this time they release a working game in one go.
